Will young Johnny Malloy find answers to his most perplexing questions—is there a God; why are we here; why won’t his girlfriend have sex with him—and find a way to stay out of trouble, or will he remain a hopeless delinquent? Growing up would be challenging, anyway, for a kid like Johnny Malloy. Confused and self-absorbed, he secretly feels detached and different. He pretends, however--with results that range from heartrending to hilarious--to be like everyone else. Add a judgmental priest, a menacing nun, a controlling mother, and a frustrating girlfriend, and his challenges grow exponentially. In The Great Pretender, a tragicomedy set in the deep south of the mid-twentieth century, a precocious adolescent meets these trials with courage, defiance and humor.

The Great Pretender Confessions of a SemiIncorrigible Southern Catholic Boy edition by Robert R Randall Literature Fiction eBooks

The Great Pretender is a wonderful story, pure pleasure to read. Robert Randall's characters are well developed, complex and colorful. Obviously, the backbone of his story is autobiographical. His psychological insights and the coming to awareness aspects of his characters are masterful. Not only is his story a delight to read, but his notes about the culture of the southern United States during the World War II era set the stage and the tempo for the reader, I recommend this book for any mature adult, but particularly for those individuals with an appreciation of the shaping influences of personal history.

Found this novel to be humorous, honest and witty. The author keeps your attention. Once I began didn't want to put it down. I became that catholic kid raised in the south in the 40-50's. There was such an innocence and authenticity running through his story. I highly recommend!
This author is not only extremely prolific, he has a great sense of humor! Witty, humorous and clever. What a great story!!
I thought it was a great story about a boy finding himself. It starts in 1930s and follows the into the 1950's.
I could really relate to this author. I also grew up in the south in the mid 50's. His wonderful narratives brought back almost forgotten memories.
I enjoyed reading about the authors growing up in Meridian, MS...interesting!!!!! We all had our doubts about who we were and what life held in store for us during the teenage years and nothing has changed. The author evidently has conquered any problems he may have had with alcohol and has finally settled down to a life of without substance abuse...my congratulations!!! The book is a worthwhile read!
Having grown up with "Johnny Malloy" in the '50s in Meridian, MS, I can attest to the accuracy of many of the descriptions in this wonderfully, poignantly, written remembrance of life in small town America in the aftermath of the Great Depression and World War II. The author vividly captures life in that time, and in my life, as we struggled with the meaning of life, adolescence, and the innocence of youth. This writing is a true treasure, and has meaning far beyond our relatively small Southern hometown. Kudos to you, JohnnyMalloy!!
This is a little gem of a memoir about childhood and adolescence in a Mississippi town during the 1940s and 1950s. Randall is a natural writer with a lucid, uncluttered style and the ability to evoke a strong sense of place. Full of humor, pathos, and all the beauty and sadness of life itself. Highly recommended.
